US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas arrived in Mexico City on Monday for two days of meetings with Mexican officials in which he will discuss the reopening of the borders. In one of the initial talks, Mayorkas said he was looking at completing parts of the border wall started by Donald Trump, especially areas of the wall already built but where there is still the lack of technology to protect it.
LPO learned that the official was emphatic that border law enforcement such as the Border Patrol strongly insisted on him to reactivate various aspects of the wall promoted by the Republican president. That request is accompanied by dramatic accounts on the country's southern border regarding illegal immigration.
For the Democratic administration, it's a very sensitive issue because Biden campaigned against the wall. When he took office, he gave Mayorkas two months to define what should be done with Trump's unfinished work. The secretary is inclined to continue with the project.
Mayorkas came to Mexico to ensure that Immigration, the most sensitive issue raised by Vice President Kamala Harris during her visit, has a concrete follow-up. Joe Biden needs to stabilize the border issue to have a chance to win the southern states in the 2022 midterm election.
Since March of last year, the governments of Mexico and the United States decided to close their borders to prevent the spread of Covid-19, and so far those measures have been maintained.
