The voracious pragmatism of Peronism ‎
By Ignacio Fidanza
‎Cristina parted ways with a conservative governor and threw an icon of Kirchnerism out the window. Guzman adjusts and faces criticism, but carries on.‎

The Peronist coalition that Cristina Kirchner came up with to return to power is a growing beast. It develops and mutates before our eyes, as it tries to resolve its issues, those apparent or profound. It is a movement in beta mode, a work in progress with the infinite plasticity of Peronism, under the strong command of the vice president.‎

‎The experiment calls for a fascinating task, to follow the trail of a political construction that bucks in face of simplifications. For some of those who are at the highest level of the coalition, Martin Guzman's problem is his excess of orthodoxy, or fiscal care. Cristina comes up with criticism, but the minister is still there and the adjustment is moving forward. Is it carelessness or calculation? Would it be an exercise in political restraint, while doing what needs to be done?‎

‎Such an orthodoxy forces economist Martin Tetaz, candidate of the center-right opposition, to place himself at the left of the government and regret the cutting of pension spending. This only happens around Peronism.‎

‎But tax withholdings are also imposed on meat exports, while the state advances strategic concessions involving the waterways and freight trains. You can place the label of "inconsistent" and sleep peacefully, or you can look under the table. It is very interesting to watch Peronism searching for its new 'skin'. It hasn't found it yet, but it is looking. Where will this political experiment that involves the Argentine soul - whether you want it or not - take us now?

‎Perón, in his second term, managed to adjust and stabilize the State quite successfully as the expansion reached the limits of concealment.‎

‎Are we, therefore, faced with a government that conceals an adjustment that coexists with real wages in historic flats, while waiting for the economy to awaken? Are these optimistic spreadsheets that German Volkswagen shows Minister Kulfas, the beginning of a recovery trend for the industrial sectors, or is it just the effect of the economy opening up after the lockdown? There is no plan. We already know that. Do we?‎

‎Cristina is not Menem and Alberto is not Cristina. "We have a moderate president," summarizes one official that did not give up thinking about politics. So we have a moderate president with a radical vice president? That represents the caricature of the mass media. Reality has a special taste for clichés.

‎Alberto represents the center-wing Peronist, the governors and the mayors. But Cristina shut off Perotti and threw Rossi, Alberto's candidate, out the window, whose stance is seen well to the left of the governor of Santa Fe. In a single move, she expanded the boundaries of her story and unsettled the core of the political analysis. Is Maximo to the right of Cristina, who is to the left of Alberto? Depends. And depending on something makes people nervous. We are all looking for certainties. Certainties are good for sleeping peacefully. ‎

‎But we can find an axis that refers to the Peronist DNA: The search for power. However, the way it is obtained, and even more interestingly, how it is managed and consolidated, opens up for a new chapter of unexpected finales. What place is Argentina located among Venezuela and Colombia, politically speaking? It is saner to look inside than outside. Seeing Peronism acting Peronist should come as no surprise to anyone. And yet it does. ‎
