Majority of Americans disapprove of Biden's immigration stance, polls show
According to Yahoo News and YouGov statistics released on Monday, 62% of Americans believe there is a "crisis" at the border.

A majority of Americans disapprove of President Joe Biden's response to the large numbers of immigrants arriving at the US-Mexico border, even as his own popularity inches up, according to new polling data.

According to Yahoo News and YouGov statistics released on Monday, 62% of Americans believe there is a "crisis" at the border.

So far, however, US official officials from a range of government entities and the White House have refused to use the term "crisis". Last week, for example, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that "children presenting at our border who are fleeing violence...who are fleeing terrible situations, is not a crisis."

The YouGov statistics show that support for the Biden administration's policies at the border fall along partisan lines, with 79% of respondents who voted for Donald Trump in the November election saying they "strongly disapprove" of the administration's border policies.

Biden supporters, on the other hand, were split, with 43% saying they "somewhat approve" of the administration's performance on border issues, with 23% saying they "strongly approve."

The Biden administration has come under fire - from Democrats and Republicans - for what some have termed a failure to adequately address the large number of migrants arriving at the border, with some focusing on the government's decision to not turn away unaccompanied migrants.

The poll showed that 43% percent of Americans approve of Biden's handling of unaccompanied minors, with 35% saying they believe authorities should also turn away unaccompanied migrants in the same manner as they do families or adults.

In Biden's first official press conference last week, the President said that while conditions for unaccompanied minors in US detention facilities are "totally unacceptable", he would continue to accept them into US custody rather than turn them away. Under the Trump administration, migrants - including children - were turned away.

"The only people we're not going to let sit there on the other side of the Rio Grande with no help is children," he said. "No previous administration has done that either, except Trump. I'm not going to do it."

The poll also found that Biden's overall approval rating has increased by 3 percentage points to 53% since mid-February. Since he took office on January 20, his approval rating has gone up 8 percentage points.

A separate poll, conducted by Ipsos and NBC News found that 57% of Americans disapprove of Biden's approach to border issues. Of the total, 54% of respondents said that recent events at the Mexican border constitute a crisis, with another 42% characterizing it as a "serious problem". Only a tiny fraction - 4% - of Americans said it was not a serious problem.

As with the YouGov poll, the Ipsos poll indicated that the issue is heavily polarizing. A vast majority of Republicans (89%) and over half of independents (54%) disapprove of Biden's immigration policies, compared to approximately one-third of Democrats.
