Argentina's Finance Minister confirmed that the dialogue with the bondholders is improving: "Things are going the way we want them to go"
Martín Guzmán confirmed that the payment grace period is one of the most contested issues by the creditors.

Minister Martin Guzman confirmed the market's perceptions of a rapprochement of positions with the bondholders. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El País, he said that the talks had improved and that "today the dialogue is going where we want it to go".

"Argentina is going to work until an agreement is reached. Clearly, there is still an important road to travel in order to reach an agreement. We want to turn Argentina into a good debtor that can meet its commitments," he said.

In turn, Guzmán stressed that the government did not make a counterproposal and acknowledged that the grace period is one of the points most resisted by the creditors.

"That was a critical parameter for our creditors. The IMF's debt sustainability analysis suggested a five-year grace period, in the negotiations we proposed four, and given the importance of that parameter we dropped it to three years. It's a process that's ongoing," he said.

In keeping with his custom, the economist reiterated his obsession with the concept of "sustainability", but left the door open to "multiple combinations of the parameters of an offer that are consistent" with this idea.

He also commented on the support received by former Minister of Economy Roberto Lavagna (2002-2005). "He told me that the same thing happened to him when he took part in a debt restructuring process. They told him: 'There is no plan'. And he warned me: 'They are going to tell you that there is no plan as long as it is not the plan they want'".

Finally, he downplayed the exchange rate noise in the parallel market and said that "the official exchange rate is going to move with inflation". "Under conditions of macroeconomic stability, stability would also be generated in the alternative exchange markets," he added.

Meanwhile, he was cautious regarding the monetary aspect once the quarantine is over. "It creates the need to sterilize part of the money creation. That is already happening. In fact, Argentina is entering a positive dynamic in the development of a public debt market in pesos that was closed in December," he added.
