The number of daily deceased remains above 200, after three days below this figure, although there has been a slight decrease compared to yesterday with 213 new deaths, which are now a total of 26,070. Meanwhile, confirmed infections through PCR have increased again from 685 this Wednesday to 754, making a total of 221,447. This upturn comes 10 days after children were allowed to go out on the streets, the first measure of relief from confinement announced by President Pedro Sánchez.
According to the director of the Center for Emergency and Health Alerts and spokesman for the Spanish government on the Coronavirus crisis, Fernando Simón, the effects of this decision should begin to be felt as of this Thursday. "As of today we should begin to see if there has been any effect on the evolution of the epidemic," the specialist explained. He tried to downplay the significance of this Thursday's upturn, pointing out that "although nothing has been observed so far, from now on we will have to begin to assess these effects over the next two or three days.
Asked about the difference between the 26,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases and the 30,938 deaths that have occurred in excess over the same period last year (MoMo system report), Simón tried to play down the importance of this significant difference, noting that this report "is used to assess overall mortality. "But all these increases that are detected are statistical increases that must then be associated with a cause and we cannot say what these increases are due to; we do not know if they are due to a huge traffic accident, we do not know if they are due to an increase in mortality from heart attacks, an increase in mortality from coronavirus or any other disease," he responded.
"We don't know from that overall mortality how many deaths will be directly attributable to the Coronavirus and how many will not. We do know that there are 26,000 deaths from Coronavirus. The figures are perfectly consistent and compatible with each other. We also know that due to the Coronavirus there have been delays in some places in the decision of citizens to go to the health systems because of the risk it could pose, out of fear... and this could also have had an impact on the evolution of some diseases and the lethality associated with some of these diseases".
More cases than reported
The Ministry of Health has made multiple changes in its reports and has altered the criteria for presenting the data on half a dozen occasions in an attempt to reduce the numbers of coronaviruses and their impact. Thus, the government department decided not to include serological and antibody tests in the total number of cases. The total number of cases, taking into account asymptomatic cases detected by antibody tests, amounts to 256,855. However, the Government has decided not to include the cases of persons who have passed the Covid according to the antibody test; an undetermined number that Health includes in the number of persons discharged, without leaving a record of how many have actually been affected.
In addition, resolved infections, which include COVID-19 patients discharged and people who have undergone a serological test but have not been able to prove the time they contracted the disease, now amount to 128,511 as 2,509 have been counted in the last 24 hours.
A total of 35,408 cases have also been reported, 2,051 more than the previous day, confirmed by antibody tests, which include both people with COVID-19 and those without symptoms at the time of the test; with these, the positive results detected in Spain amount to 256,855.
Meanwhile, new hospitalizations have fallen to 548 and total 121,014 since the beginning of the pandemic; Catalonia, with 163, and Madrid, with 128, continue to present the highest figures, unlike the Canary Islands, which has reported one; Cantabria and Murcia (2 each) and La Rioja (5). Ceuta and Melilla continue to have no new patients, 58 in the last 24 hours and 11,140 in total, but 40 of them have been admitted to ICUs in Madrid and Catalonia, 20 in each.
