Senate: to comply with USMCA, Eduardo Ramírez promotes new elections in unions

Sensitive issue in bilateral relations. Decisive battle in the teachers' union.

The President of the Senate Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar had a meeting today, Thursday, with the National Movement for the Transformation of Unions. A league of different union groups that proposed to start promoting the processes of union democratization demanded by the USMCA.

This is a sensitive matter for the López Obrador administration on various sides. Especially because of the bilateral relationship with the US: union democracy is a very important issue for democrats and will be an issue on which they will emphasize the bilateral relationship.

"The head of the Senate issued a point of agreement for various federal agencies to initiate electoral processes in the different unions," Ricardo Aguilar Gordillo, a member of the MNTS political commission, told LPO.

Among the unions that will have to go to election processes is the SNTE, the powerful teachers union, which was supposed to hold its elections months ago but was suspended due to the pandemic. The objective would be to hold these elections in the first months of 2021.

On that occasion, it will be possible to see if union leader Elba Esther Gordillo finally regains formal control of one of the largest unions in the continent. Gordillo is also closely monitoring the process of forming the Progressive Social Networks party, which will compete in the mid-term elections.
