Spanish government raises minimum wage to 950 euro

Pedro Sánchez's Minister of Labour announced the measure after meeting with unions and employers.

The Government, the unions and the employers have agreed on an increase in the minimum interprofessional wage (MIS) for 2020 of 5.5 %, up to 950 euros gross per month, announced the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz.

This increase is 50 euros more than the 900 euros set for 2019. After last year's historical increase -22.3%- now the coalition Executive increases the minimum wage by 5%.

The agreement was closed at the meeting held this afternoon by the Minister, the Secretaries General of CCOO and UGT, Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, and the Presidents of CEOE and Cepyme, Antonio Garamendi and Gerardo Cuerva.

The PSOE and United We Can agreed in their coalition pact on a salary increase that would reach 60% of the average salary in Spain, a figure that would reach 1,200 euros; finally, the increase was more modest than the initial approach in view of the reticence shown in recent days by the employers' association.

"We are aware that the previous year's increase to 900 euros was a historic one. We have a commitment to extend this rise to around 60% of the average salary at the end of the legislature," Diaz defended to the media on Wednesday.
